Lucy Spraggan wowed Judges on this weekend’s X Factor after abandoning her self-penned melodies for a potentially risky cover of Kanye West’s hip-hop hit Gold Digger.
Speaking before her performance, the singer-songwriter revealed that part of the motivation for picking such an upbeat song was the recent passing of her Gran.
Fighting back tears, she said: “My Granddad said on the phone that when [my Gran] was really ill… the last time she really properly smiled was when she saw me on TV.”
She added: “I don’t want people to feel sorry for me because I know that other people have gone through things like this too. I want people to judge me on my performance.”
Judges Gary and Nicole both admitted to Lucy that they had concerns about her doing a cover, after her previous attempts met a lukewarm reception.
At the Boot Camp stage, her performance of Maroon 5’s Moves Like Jagger was described as “awkward” and “messy”. Then, at the Judges’ Houses, her cover of Dolly Parton’s I Will Always Love You had Tulisa wonder whether her voice could stand up to others in the competition.
Tonight, those fears were laid to rest with Gary gushing that he “really enjoyed the performance,” while fellow Judge Nicole was also delighted.
Louis said: “You are a true professional to get up and it was a very confident performance.”
Proud mentor Tulisa added: “You could have gone up there and could have done a sad, slow thing, but you didn’t. You turned round to me and said you wanted to make people smile and you’ve done that.”
Speaking to host Dermot O’Leary after her performance Lucy added: “I just wanted people to have a dance and be happy, because I want to be happy too.”
With her first successful cover now joining a host of self-penned successes, Lucy is fast becoming one of the competitions most unique acts, but will changing tactic on the second week of Live Shows pay off? Find out on the X Factor results show from 8pm on Sunday.
