Dancing On Ice 2012: Matthew Wolfenden stuns with a beautiful Bolero

Matthew Wolfenden gave a stunning performance of his version of the Bolero on tonight’s Dancing On Ice final as he battled to be named this year’s champion.

The Emmerdale actor and his professional partner Nina Ulanova moved around the ice effortlessly, incorporating a dazzling combination of twirls, lifts, spins and other impressive moves.

It was a chance to really showcase Matthew's skating skills and prove just how far he’s come following six months of ice dance training, and 12 intensive weeks of live shows.

Skating off the ice after his routine, Matthew said: “Honestly every time that music starts you do get tingles…it was unbelievable.”

Skating coach Christopher Dean, who made the Bolero famous alongside partner Jane Torvill at the 1984 Olympics, was clearly pleased with the routine. He said: “It was sublime. Matthew is exhausted now, today he put his heart and soul into this.”

The judges were similarly impressed, with Robin Cousins commenting: “That is probably the most difficult Bolero we’ve had since day one of Dancing On Ice.”

Katarina Witt added: Kat: “The thing is there was no one single crossover which was in no way boring because it kept going from one trick to another, there was either a lift, a step or a trick, always something going in from the beginning. It was mesmerising, gentle, sexy.”

She added: “I just can’t imagine what kind of world class skater you would have become if you started as a wee boy.”

Louie Spence concluded: “It was superb, by putting your own choreography into it as well it became an extension of you… you made it your own. Beautiful.”

Before going on stage to dance, Matthew said: “It’s quite a daunting overwhelming experience to have to choreograph our own Bolero. I want to do the piece of music justice and I want to do Chris [Dean] and Jane [Torvill] proud.”

We think you certainly manage to do that, Matthew!

Matthew and fellow finalist Jorgie Porter will no wait to see who will be named the Dancing On Ice champion, as selected by the public vote.
