Gareth Thomas’ days as a Rugby Union star seemed far behind him tonight as he performed a delicate and emotional dance with professional partner Robin Johnstone.
Skating to Beneath Your Beautiful by Labrinth and Emeli Sandé, the two demonstrated how far Gareth had come in such a short time and scored a sensational 30.0 out of 40.0.
That score is even higher than last week’s 27.5 and cemented Gareth’s place as a surprise contender in the competition.
Head judge Robin Cousins, who scored him 8.0, said: “You did not take your eyes off of your partner for that entire performance and she was in very safe hands. A few weeks ago I said we would never see an elegant skater but we saw it emerge tonight.”
Ashley Roberts, who scores on the performance rather than technical ability, awarded Jason and Robin a 7.0. She said: “What I love is each week you’re growing, you’re evolving. You found the softness and the strength in your lines, it was very beautiful.”
The ever-critical Jason Gardiner scored 6.5, saying: “I’m a big fan Gareth but tonight, for me, I would have liked to have seen a little bit more of the tenderness and a little bit more of the vulnerability.”
But final judge Karen Barber disagreed, scoring the couple a whopping 8.5. She said: “That was a brand new lift and it was performed brilliantly. It was strong, it was gentle, and what I asked of you this week was you need to look at her and tell me how much you care about her and I felt that. It was very, very beautiful.”
Gushing Gareth then proved he has a soft centre despite his solid build, saying: “I’m real chuffed. This week it’s been really emotional because she’s an amazing person to skate with and today, whatever happens, I wanted to show her on the dance what she means to me.”
