Ken Barlow has been leading quite a quiet life with his wife Deirdre since retiring, but it looks like his womanising ways might be about to resurface when he comes face to face with old flame Wendy Crozier.
Ken and Wendy had an affair 22 years ago, leading to the break-up of Ken’s marriage to Deirdre, and although the pair decide to be friends, Ken’s decision to keep this from Deirdre looks likely to cause all sorts of chaos for him on the cobbles!
William Roache, who plays Ken, explained: “Once again Ken is going to be having women troubles. It never ends! 24 girlfriends and three wives – I thought he was going to be retiring from all that but no, another one looms on the scene!
“Ken is invited to be on the board of governors at the school and one of the other governors is Wendy Crozier. It’s a total shock for Ken when he sees her. He gets friendly with her but he makes the great mistake of lying to Deirdre…”
Wendy, who is now also married, is keen to bury the hatchet with Ken, and as the pair grow closer, Ken starts to take more care of his appearance.
To begin with Deirdre is none the wiser, putting Ken’s new look down to his new job, but when she does eventually find out it looks like Ken is going to be in a whole heap of trouble!
“At the moment Ken’s going to get all the aggravation of having an affair without any of the fun of it,” William said. “Ken will be in deep, deep trouble, but he has been there before so he should know how to handle that!”
