Samia Ghadie said that she was "surprised" that her Coronation Street alter-ego falls for a gay man.
Samia, who plays Maria Connor in the Weatherfield soap, said that Audrey Roberts (Sue Nicholls) will confront her character over her developing relationship with Marcus Dent (Charlie Condou).
She told Digital Spy that she was surprised when she first saw the scripts containing the storyline.
Samia is quoted as saying: "Obviously you never really know what to expect at Corrie because anything can happen, but I never expected that she would fall for a gay guy!
"I don't think Maria realises that her feelings could be stronger than that until Audrey points it out.
"I don't really know where it's going or what's coming up, so it's hard to say how serious her feelings are at the moment."
She added: "But I do know that Maria is completely freaked out when Audrey points it out!"
