David is one of Britain’s most successful swimmers, and as well as being an Olympic Gold Medallist he is also a successful businessman and entrepreneur.
Born in Sri Lanka in 1954 and educated at Daniel Stewart’s College in Scotland, David Wilkie’s school years were dominated by swimming, which took him overseas on a swimming scholarship to University of Miami where he read Mass Communications Law, graduating in 1977.
During his time at University, Wilkie competed in every major swimming event representing his college and his country.
He first represented Great Britain in 1969, and throughout the 70s went on to achieve world recognition for his sporting abilities winning medals at the Olympic and Commonwealth Games, as well as the World and European Championships.
He is still the only swimmer in the world to win the British, American, Commonwealth, European, World and Olympic titles at the same time.
During his career he has broken five world records. In more recent years he has presented and commentated on a variety of shows for the BBC, ITV, SKY, Channel 4 and STV. He is patron of The British Swimming Foundation among many others, and is also a UNICEF Afghanistan Olympic Ambassador.
As well as being awarded an MBE by the Queen he has also won many awards and accolades including Scottish Sportsman of the Year and BBC Team Sportsman of the Year, and has earnt a place in the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
