Clare Cochrane's Active Play

Personal trainer Clare Cochrane decided to induct the Busy Bees into the world of Active Play – encouraging our nursery nurses to be active at work and, in turn, set a good example to the children they look after.

So what is Active Play? The emphasis on these classes is: agility, balance, co-ordination and fun – always done through play and imagination.

To show the Busy Bees how it is done was Clare Cochrane, who qualified as an exercise-to-music instructor 18 years ago – and enjoyed making a positive impact on people's lives so much that she decided to make it her full-time vocation.

Active Play is done in short bursts to keep attention and keep it relevant to learning, using body movement only and making sure to keep hydrated.

Children and young people should take part in 60 minutes of personal activity every day which can include walking, dancing and active play. Meanwhile adults should be taking part in 30 minutes of personal activity.

Young children don’t need to do the full hour all at once, and can split it over the course of the day. As well as helping children develop healthily, Active Play can help them grow confidence and self-esteem – and potentially make some new friends in the process.

It helps children build a healthy and active heart, developing strong muscles and bones, and helps reduce the risk of some chronic diseases in later life.

Though remember, young children don’t need to do a full hour all at once – they can split it over the course of the day.
