Britain’s Got Talent opera singers Jonathan Antoine and Charlotte Jaconelli have dazzled and delighted the audience and the judges on this year’s series with their stunning performances.
The school friends have managed to make it into this Saturday’s grand final after wowing through all stages in the contest, and have now become overnight sensations around the world, after scores of people checked out their audition online.
But how did the opera-loving pair first set out on their amazing journey? Well, Charlotte has been a solo artist all her life, and always enjoyed performing. She’s currently studying for a BTEC performing arts diploma in musical theatre at The Andrew Lloyd Webber Arts Educational School.
Jonathan only took up singing five years ago, and is currently training at the Junior Royal Academy’s Saturday School, as well as studying music, drama and English.
The pair have been singing together for two years, realising how well their voices gelled after their singing teacher to join forces for their GCSE music exam. The rest, as they say, is history.
It was Charlotte’s idea to audition for BGT, and just as well they did, as the opera duo are now tipped as one of the favourites to steal the crown this Saturday in the grand final.
Walking on stage at their first audition, Charlotte and Jonathan looked like two ordinary students, dressed down in their day-to-day clothes. But when they opened their mouths and began to sing, you could hear a pin drop in the auditorium, as the judges and audience watched on in amazement.
Performing The Prayer for their audition piece, the pair wowed with their pop-opera voices, with the judges and the audience getting on their feet to give them a standing ovation.
Simon loved them – but had one piece of advice for the duo, which would split Jonathan and Charlotte up.
“OK, this is what I think - Charlotte I think you're good, but Jonathan you are unbelievable. I mean, seriously, you have an outstandingly good voice. I like the fact that this works as a duo but I worry Charlotte whether you're gonna hold him back,” the judge told the pair.
The opera duo still got four very strong “yes” votes though, securing their place in the semi-final round. And after Jonathan refused to ditch his friend and singing partner, the pair returned to perform Caruso at the second semi-final show on Monday.
It was a gamble that paid off, with the pair once again receiving a standing ovation, and even better comments than before. Simon Cowell took back his previous advice, telling the duo: “There is a lot at stake here and like I said at the first audition Charlotte, I believed you were holding Jonathan back.
"And you made the decision to stay together, Jonathan, and I have to say that was the best decision you could have made. I understand your chemistry, I understand the support. Charlotte you sang really, really well tonight.”
Simon then concluded the praise by telling them: “That was one of my favourite ever Britain’s Got Talent performances.”
The other judges echoed his praise and the audience at home clearly agreed, as Jonathan and Charlotte received the highest number of votes from the general public, securing their place in the grand final this Saturday - which Jonathan said will never sink in.
We can’t wait to see what Jonathan and Charlotte perform during what is set to be one of the most spectacular BGT finals ever!
They’ll go up against male choir Only Boys Aloud, dog act Ashleigh and Pudsey, Latin American ballroom dancers Kai and Natalia, young singer Molly Rainford and boy band Loveable Rogues. Four more acts will be announced for the final, with two selected from tonight’s semi-final, and two from Thursday night’s semi-final.
