BGT: Jonathan and Charlotte earn standing ovation for stunning performance

Britain’s Got Talent singers Charlotte and Jonathan gave a simply stunning performance on tonight’s semi-final, earning them a standing ovation off the judges as well as glowing praise.

The operatic duo sang Caruso, as they battled against the other acts to win a place in Saturday’s grand final.

And it looks like their dream of performing in the final could become a reality, after Simon Cowell told the pair: “That was one of my favourite ever Britain’s Got Talent performances.”

Now their fate lies in the hands of the British public, who will vote for their favourite acts, before two from tonight’s semi-final are announced as finalists.

Dressed in a full length black gown with gold studs, Charlotte looked stunning as she opened the performance before Jonathan joined in, showing off the hugely powerful operatic voice that made the judges sit up and take notice at the audition stage.

At the audition stage, Simon Cowell had advised Jonathan to ditch Charlotte and go solo, but he refused to cut his school friend from the act – and tonight the duo proved it was the right move.

Clearly moved, and looking slightly tearful, Alesha Dixon said: “Charlotte there was a lot of pressure on you tonight, and let me tell you, you held your own, you started that song so beautifully. And this is a special friendship, and there is special chemistry between you, and when you sang Jonathan, I felt that in every part of my body.”

Amanda Holden continued: “It was just a tour de force. I didn’t see you the first time [at the auditions], I watched the YouTube clip like everyone else. You literally blew me back into my seat. I’ve always appreciated your friendship and I kind of leaned towards what Simon said in the audition, but now you work beautifully together.”

Simon Cowell added: “There is a lot at stake here and like I said at the first audition Charlotte, I believed you were holding Jonathan back.  And you made the decision to stay together, Jonathan, and I have to say that was the best decision you could have made. I understand your chemistry, I understand the support. Charlotte you sang really, really well tonight.”

Simon then concluded the praise, by giving Charlotte and Jonathan biggest possible compliment, telling the pair: “That was one of my favourite ever Britain’s Got Talent performances.”

And David Walliams concluded the praise by telling the duo:  “Well done for proving Simon wrong, I have no clue what you were singing about, but I want to try! You are such fantastic singers. You could be winners on Saturday night.”
